smiling image of LaTonyaSince childhood, music has been a part of my life. My father, Thomas Blige, was a musician. He had his own band and they would travel from state to state playing for different venues. My mother also sang with my dad, but it did not work out. My mother wanted to be a wife and a mother so she really did not have a lot of time for singing, her focus became, raising her family. My dad had my sister and me always singing some of his favorite songs or doing background singing for him. Mary and I have always been fascinated with music. Something great did come from what was learned and adored. That is the queen of hip hop & soul my sister “ MARY J BLIGE”.

I can remember when my sister’s first song “REAL LOVE” was being played on the radio, I was working for the company Met Life then and we were still living in the projects. I was living up stairs on the 7th floor and my mother was living on the 3rd floor. We were just doing normal everyday life things; it felt good and we were happy, but it did not feel real yet. First I started as a background singer and writer for Mary, then I started assisting her with her everyday needs and learning from her managers just watching, listening, and at times suggesting things. Then my sister asked me to come aboard & co-manage with her managers, who were on board at that time. That part of the music world was very different from singing and writing songs. I had to keep an open mind about a lot of things, because to most of the people I would meet or do business with, my sister was just another product to them, so sometimes some things would hurt me when they were being said, but I had to keep it professional. At the end of the day there were somethings spectacular I did see, that those managers did not see; and that was the joy to see my sister happy about her work.

Getting to the point, I did and I am still learning a lot in this music business. I want to let everyone know how my sister opened up doors for her family; and I really thank her for changing our lives. When it came to my recreation time, I wanted to go outside & play. My sister Mary really enjoyed singing all the time, sometimes she and I would act like we were “Peaches and Herb’s” or a “Taste of Honey”, I believe, I was the bass player. Now I am on the side of the business where I will get to see, feel and do what I always love doing. I will be writing & singing my own songs and someone else will be handling most of my business. The singing part of the business is a lot of work and dedication. I am a person who enjoy listening to all kinds of music and I will like to work and write with a lot of different writers. I have written and co- produced songs on a couple of albums for Mary. I have also written & co- written songs for Faith Evans and Mariah Carey’s former female group, “Allure” I also written for producer “Chucky Thompson” artist “Frankie”.

I don’t feel this gift will ever leave me. It is in my heart & spirit. Now is the time for me to share it with the world. People would say, this is a very hard job to do and believe me, it is, a very hard job to do but regardless of how hard it may get I still make time to maintain my family whom I love very much! My husband , Xenos DaCosta Sr., my oldest son Albert Walton and my youngest son Xenos DaCosta Jr., they are very supportive and proud of what I am trying to do, Along with a host of my family, friends & mangement team. I will like to thank them all very much!

Latonya Blige Dacosta
